Marco Da Sliva Featured in Master Painting

From Marco's blog:

In this exceptional painting, [by ROSS WATSON] Da Silva joins Caravaggio's group of youths, in a convincing and harmonious way, who appear comfortable and relaxed in each others company. This is Watson's first reference of The Musicians (or The Concert), from the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The artists Berlin bed cover is draped over Da Silva's shoulders, as he engages us, mimicking his friends, head tilting in the opposite direction to theirs.

Caravaggio's painting has been suggested as an allegory of Music, deviating from the standard by painting young boys instead of girls. It contains three figures loosely dressed in more "classical" dress, accompanied by a winged cupid on the left, who gathers fruit. The green-blue of Da Silva's tattoos, is made more distinctive by the contrasting red drapery, and the composition of diagonal lines and tilted heads combine to energize this striking scene of shadow and light.

When Da Silva modeled for this painting in Berlin, he had begun preparing for another tour with Kylie Minogue, and here Watson refers to the sometimes lonely and isolated existence of performers whilst touring - a metaphorical offering of close and trusted friends.

Marco makes a fabulous subject for paintings because of his Mediterranean features and characteristic tattoos. This is a lovely painting.

As a further example, here is a detail of a work in the private collection of E. Hirano:

You can see the entire work here. Again, Marco has wonderful features that are compelling for both the photographer and artist alike.

Benoȋt Prévot's Latest Work

Benoȋt isn't saying who the commission was for. Click to enlarge.

All I can say is that the man is a true artist. Everything looks so perfect and finished. I adore the colors and the attention to details! One can feel the life in the man and the dog, as well as the creature sneaking out behind the cactus in the background. Look at the subtle expression on the man's face; is it trepidation, worry, fear? Is the hound leading him to safety or peril? Does the creature in the background threaten them? Overall, the drawing is so intriguing! I'm just dying to know more!

From Doug's blog (Unnatural Devotions):

Oil pastel on canvas paper. This one felt like it was based on the energy of world events, so expect (perhaps) a psychic reading sometime soon. Click image to enlarge.

Francesco D'Macho a Portrait by Rob Bartell

From Rob Bartell's blog:

In response to his many, many loyal fans around the world, I am so pleased to present the release of this Premier Limited Edition Print of the portrait I did for the legendary Francesco d'Macho. This is slightly different than the one I did back in 2007 -- I made some changes, and hopefully some improvements, but I'll let you be the judge -- the earlier version is posted in the May 2007 archives of my companion blog -- the Art of Rob Bartell.

This Premier Edition of Francesco is limited to only 30 prints. Every print is personally hand signed and numbered.

I am deeply grateful to Francesco for all his support and kindness -- he's truly a great, gracious and immensely talented man.

The auction for the FIRST EDITION Print starts tonight and ends next Tuesday, May 26th. Don't wait until it's too late to bid...here!

David

From Rob Bartell:

...of the cabinet, that is.

"David" is actually one of the first pieces I did, way back in 2006, then did a little more work on him in early 2008. I just realized yesterday that I hadn't listed him in ages...so he's now back out of the cabinet, and up for your bids!

Please check out David, and some of his friends, by clicking here!

You'll be glad you did! :)

Benoȋt Prévot: The Man and His Art

This post tells a story about the artist Benoȋt Prévot. Yesterday evening, I visited his blog and he had written a long post in French with the phrase "quitte mon blog," and I freaked because in the past he had dissappeared and reopened in another blog. So I quickly wrote a comment asking if this was goodbye. He wrote back that he was blue and completely bored with everything on his drawing board except for the work with Slick It Up but it was so nice of me to comment. He was only signing off for the evening, since it was so late. [Thank goodness for that!]

I think we should all visit his blog and try to cheer him up!

The artist in a Slick It Up hood. Doesn't he look fabulous! What a hottie!

Wake Up Call Guy Abducted by Herodotus!

Remember this guy from our last Wake Up Call? Well, Herodotus was so taken with him that he abducted him and....

Oh no! Chained him up! He is so helpless now! What will happen next? What cruel intent does Herodotus have in mind for this poor helpless young man?

I'm totally drooling just thinking about it. Do let us in on your evil plans Sir...

The Artist Herodotus

Recently, Herodotus sent me this artwork which was inspired by the Etienne cartoon above it. The cartoon comes to life in color the detail is so fine. Any fantasy can become reality under Herodotus' hand it seems. So we shall see over time as we explore the Telemachus Gallery together.

Another Masterpiece by François Sagat

Once again, François Sagat has chosen a classical piece of artwork to copy and make his own. This time I will admit my stupidity, even though I have studied art history and visited some of the great art galleries in Europe, and admit that I am not familiar with this work.

Update: The piece is Cleopatra by John William Waterhouse (1887)

So let us have a look at what he has done. Click to enlarge. The work is in pencil and rendered in very fine detail. It is quite beautiful to look at and pleasing to the eye as well. But Sagat has captured the mood of the original in that the judgemental expression of the character's downward gazing eyes is perfect. It is as if she/he is sizing up someone who is so much less than they and thinking "You dare come before me with your petty grievance?" That is what makes this a wonderful drawing.

There are some other details that Sagat has changed also. He has bared his thigh and chest plus added more folds of fabric to the tunic. Also added are more flourishes in the crown and a wide belt instead of a draping sash. None of these detracts from the overall effect of the finished work.

Overall, I like this work quite a bit and think it is a most impressive addition to M. Sagat's portfolio. It shows ambition that he has successfully attempted to copy a classical painting once again and add his own elements. But then as if that wasn't enough, he mirrors the painting in his own interpretation which I feel adds immensely to the work.

Clearly, M. Sagat has artistic talent to spare and is ready to tackle color and new mediums. I'd love to see what his genius could do with watercolors, or oil paints. He certainly has the patience for either.

Amazing Self Portrait by François Sagat

This is just an incredible self portrait drawn by François Sagat! You absolutely must enlarge it to see the fine detail.

He seems to be dressed as a Renaissance noble man in a high necked, ruched jacket, embroidered blouse and pleated pantaloons tucked into heavily detailed socks. Seated, he is venturing forth into a swampy waterway on a small barge the seat of which is covered with a rug with his familiar pyramids in circles design (the eyes on the rug are crying). In the prow there are three candles one of which is lit and two of which are not. The barge has a lit candle lamp hanging from the ornate bow. M. Sagat has a tear running down is right cheek and his lips are slightly parted; a string of beads are twisted in the fingers of his right hand. The drawing is a copy of Waterhouse's Lady of Shalott and is titled "The Lady of Faggot". For more information on The Lady of Shalott painting go here.

The medium used for the drawing looks to me like a very soft pencil.

This is an exquisite work and I would love to get more information about it from Francois if I could. I would want to know what significance the drawing holds for him and what he was thinking when he drew it.

Bravo! A great effort!
