1984 VW Rabbit GTI - Kleine GTI Ad

The first new car I ever bought was a 1984 VW Rabbit GTI. I already was driving a used Rabbit (I don't recall the year) and loved the short wheel base, tight turning radius and responsiveness of the car. Then I saw this commercial and just had to buy it.

I was not disappointed. I used to jump this baby on small hills, drive her over 100 mph, and even won some drag races with her over much faster cars when the drivers had no idea how to shift. I only sold her when the 16 valve GTI came along and was so much better.

I just can't seem to get the video to play, so it you want to see it go here.

Oh yeah I remember that one! In fact when you mentioned GTI that song played in my head! Your so right about the turning radius and great handling of the Rabbit. My sister had a Golf which was basically the same car and she loved it too. VW makes some cool commercials too! DAS AUTO!

It was truth in advertising: that car was so much fun to drive! It was an amusment ride on wheels! I never enjoyed my trip to work each day more. I used to get out of the car and just stare back at it in wonder thinking "My car did that?"
I was very lucky and never got a speeding ticket with the '84 GTI. I think I got two with the '86, but that was because I moved to CT.

I've never drag raced, but I have gotten into mini-races with other GTIs on random stretches of roads. They were more fun than I care to admit. Best thing about my GTI is the dual clutch. From a deap stop, I can usually zoom pass faster cars without even trying because of that baby. Love it.
