"War" by Edwin Starr

War! - huh- yeah-
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Uh-huh

War! – huh – yeah-
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Say it again y’all

War! – huh – good God
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me…

Ohhh… War! I despise
Because it means destruction’
Of innocent lives

War means tears
to thousands of mothers eyes
When their sons go to fight
and lose their lives

I said - War! Huh – Good God y’all
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Say it again

War! Whoa, Lord
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me…

War! It ain’t nothing but a heartbreaker
War! Friend only to the undertaker
War! It’s an enemy to all mankind
The thought of war blows my mind

War has caused unrest in the younger generation
Induction then destruction-
Who wants to die?

Ohhh… War – Good God Y’all
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Say it, Say it, Say it

War! Uh-huh – Yeah - Huh!
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me…

War! It ain’t nothing but a heartbreaker
War! It’s got one friend, that’s the undertaker
War has shattered many a young mans dreams
Made him disabled bitter and mean
Life is much to precious to spend fighting wars these days
War can’t give life, it can only take it away

War! Huh – Good God y’all
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Say it again

War! Whoa, Lord
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me…

War! It ain’t nothing but a heartbreaker
War! Friend only to the undertaker
Peace Love and Understanding;
tell me, is there no place for them today?
They say we must fight to keep our freedom
But Lord knows there’s got to be a better way

War! Huh – Good God y’all
What is it good for?
You tell me
Say it, Say it, Say it

War! Huh – Good God y’all
What is it good for?
Stand up and shout it.
Nothing!

This song was number 1 on the pop charts in 1970. Download it free here. If you’ve never heard it, you absolutely must. It is a classic.

The Vietnam War was the first televised war. Every night, there it was in your living room (in living color). Dan Rather, or whatever anchor for whatever station you watched, was in the jungle reporting on today’s skirmishes and the US and native casualties along with the gruesome images, some of which have become historic and haunting. I am amazed at how different the war in Iraq is as far as television coverage. Perhaps that is why no one is motivated to protest the carnage on both sides as happened across our nation during the Vietnam War.

The media is evil. Truly. The pawn of the powerful controlling the minds of the helpless. I stopped watching TV all together about 6 months after 9/11 because it suddenly struck me that I was being fed false, misleading, or sensationalized coverage of everything. Even the healthwatch clips were like that. It's amazing we can even think for ourselves anymore.

Thanks Ryan. It is a cool song. I heard it first in Jr. High, that dates me, doesn't it? I still sing it when it is appropriate, which sadly these days is all of the time.

Larry - I also have stopped watching the news because it is all too depressing. But, tell me that you still watch the Scifi channel. ;)

Vietnam was in black and white in our house. Still gave me nightmares that a 9-year old should never have.

I can't imagine what goes on in the psyches of children who've lived through the past few years ... all live action and "fair and balanced."

Bob, No child should have nightmares about war worse yet a war within their own country. My nightmares have mushroom clouds in them since during the Cuban Missle Crisis when I asked my mom if the Russians were going to bomb us, she said that she wasn't sure. Sorry you only had a b&w tv.

Do you think that kids these days have nightmares about wars?
