Mon Voyage À L'Acadie: Part 11: Moncton & Homeward

Next, mom and I drove down to see our English Canadian relatives in Moncton. Mom took a photo of this floral arrangement in downtown because it is rare to see one that includes cattails. Nice, isn't it?

We went to another seafood restaurant for dinner and there was a view of the Bay of Fundy at sunset when we left. These are some photos I took of it. In the first one you can see two kids playing on a raft if you enlarge the photo.

One day, we drove to Magnetic Hill to buy to some maple sugar candy and fudge. I thougt that the display was rather artful and took this picture:

The fudge was delicious!And the maple cream my mom treated me to was awesomely tasty. I had never had it before. I think she's been holding out on the good stuff all these years.

For all the readers who are not familiar with maple sugar candy, here is a photo of it from the internet. It has a somewhat crystalline consistency outside, but the inside is maple creamy and delicious and melts in your mouth.

We dropped Mom off in New London at the ferry and she took this shot of Vasco on the ferry as they steamed their way home to LI. We had a great time, but it is wonderful to get home after a long trip! Doesn't this puppy look happy to be going home?

Mon Voyage À L'Acadie: Part 10: Bouctouche & the Birthplace of JC Irving

Well now. How does one come down from the excitement of le grand tintamarre? I asked my cousin if he had gotten it all out of his system and could spend the oncoming year being contained and sensible without any outbursts of the sort I had witnessed the day before. He gave a wry chuckle and disagreed.

"No, I am charged up for the oncoming year," he exclaimed. "It filled me with the energy to go on in my life as an Acadian! That is how I feel. That is until the next tintamarre."

And so I bid my cousins sweet farewell until I could return... who knows when?

My mother and I hit the road bound for Moncton and our English cousins.

On our way we stopped for lunch at Bouctouche, New Brunswick. This marsh was behind the visitor center. If you enlarge it, you will see the heron in the middle.

The real reason we stopped there, though, was to see the Irving Memorial Chapel and the koi pond. This Scottish Kirk is constructed of stone with an open timber post and beam roof that is exteriorly covered by slates.

But here is my real draw; the koi pond! Here are two fellows working on it when we drove up. Fortunately, the younger one is in charge of keeping it! How lucky to come upon him!

Finally I got his attention and we got to talking about koi, and he told me that the fish are only 3 years old. So, not so big yet. But he fed them and they are gorgeous!

Now, we come to the big goal of my trip, Le grand tintamarre in Caraquet, NB. We had arrived early and the official parade was supposed to begin at 6 PM Atlantic time. So, with time to kill, I walked around and snapped some photos.

Here is a man from the Savoie family. According to his genealogy, he is descended from royalty. He looks it too. I could see him in a crown. But right now, I think he needs another hand.

Here is a papillion; it looks a bit hot out for a dog today. He reminded me of Joshua, Martin Mazza's puppy [which can be seen at Stag Homme Studios]!

Oh, mom and I did take time for some Caraquet oysters. This handsome young man shucked them for us and they were DIVINE! Raw and firm with briney goodness! Slurp!

There were Acadians from Louisiana at the food court behind the church who were deported there during the horrible times of 1755. They offered very unspicy versions of shrimp etouffe and jambalaya. But, they were inexpensive and filling, so we ate them.

Then it was time and the parade began! OMG! It was so gosh darn noisy! A din for sure! I approached the street and couldn't tell where the parade began and the audience was. It was just a huge, noisy milling crowd of humanity. A crazy, Acadian riot! Out of control! I raised my camera to get a photo of all the commotion.

It was like this one day of the year, August 15, all of these typically reserved Canadian people just let loose and go nuts making noise with airhorns, clackers, maracas, clappers, tambourines, whistles, drums, and what have you.

Also, there was a costume and float contest to liven up the parade. Below, these two fellows figured that drag is always a good bet in costuming.

These two gals are dressed in old timey frocks, but wouldn't stand away far enough for me to capture the pretty hems of their dresses.

The family name here was Mourant, which means to be dying. In their float they featured a dying man who is being administered an IV of tequila! LOL!

This was so much fun! A huge Acadian flag that spanned half the street was passed over the parade and observers and parade marchers had to lift it over with their hands. It was so inclusive and bonding for everybody!

This was an impressive float because the actors were painted white and stayed in character and the boat was so spooky.

This was fun - a ship decorated like those we saw in the fleets!

The Acadians are a very inclusive people as shown by this African man. He and others like him, plus some Acadians played some Rastafarian drum rhythms.

These two ladies were selling maple leaves with Acadian family names on them.

Now, here is a way to get attention - get on top of a cherry picker!

Here I am at the parade [my mom shot this photo with her iPhone and all the rest]! I even joined it for a bit when my cousin invited me to. How could I turn him down? I am not Acadian, my mom's family is Quebecois, but on August 15th, everybody is Acadaian!

Mon Voyage À L'Acadie: Part 8: New Brunswick Aquarium & Marine Center, Inkerman

So from the fleet, mom and I drove into the Town of Shippagan and decided to see what the New Brunswick Aquarium had on display.

There was this very beautiful quilt that you need to enlarge to enjoy. It has many ocean creatures on each panel and is very imaginative and clever.

Basically, the aquarium displayed the fish that are native to the waters in the area, many of which we had been, um, eating! But these jellyfish were not the case.

And though we ate many lobsters, none were completely white!

Nor where any blue!

These seals were exactly the same as the ones we saw around Bonaventure Island. I was so excited, because I just love seals!

So I took a closeup of one...

This is what a seal does when it is not ready for it's closeup. It swims to the bottom and lies there with it's tummy up and plays dead.

But here's a chipper one ready for a closeup! See, he/she is even smiling! But I didn't have a fish to reward this lovely pose, so I walked away sad.

Then we drove on heading for Inkerman Parrish on our way home. All of these areas are inland wetlands consisting of marshes, swamps, bogs, ponds, etc.. As a matter of fact, New Brunswick is so wet that my female host told a really neat joke about it. Here it is:

A man from New Brunswick dies and goes up to Saint Peter's gate. Of those not admitted immediately, Satan is sorting through people who will go lower and those who will go to purgatory. Well, back to the trip. So, as we drive along, we see many osprey nests, so I got out and took a photograph of one. Click to enlarge and you will see that the bird is stretching his wings. See the tall trees in the distance? Would you believe that there is a huge church behind those?

This is Catholic Church of Saint Michel in Inkerman Ferry that was built in 1916. Inkerman Ferry is such a small town that there is not even a grocery store in it. It is stuck out in the middle of no place. If you enlarge this photo you can read the sign next to the building to see the church's name and the stone tablet underneath the rose window hast the date of the building's completion.

Note the twin silver domes and brick with stone masonry which is typical of the Catholic religion's churches in this area. Also, the church is decorated for the upcoming festival.

See! There is nothing near it at all. I wish I had the time to go miles away and photograph it... It is just standing there in the middle of nothing. A miracle!

Marco Da Sliva Featured in Master Painting

In this exceptional painting, [by ROSS WATSON] Da Silva joins Caravaggio's group of youths, in a convincing and harmonious way, who appear comfortable and relaxed in each others company. This is Watson's first reference of The Musicians (or The Concert), from the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The artists Berlin bed cover is draped over Da Silva's shoulders, as he engages us, mimicking his friends, head tilting in the opposite direction to theirs.

Caravaggio's painting has been suggested as an allegory of Music, deviating from the standard by painting young boys instead of girls. It contains three figures loosely dressed in more "classical" dress, accompanied by a winged cupid on the left, who gathers fruit. The green-blue of Da Silva's tattoos, is made more distinctive by the contrasting red drapery, and the composition of diagonal lines and tilted heads combine to energize this striking scene of shadow and light.

When Da Silva modeled for this painting in Berlin, he had begun preparing for another tour with Kylie Minogue, and here Watson refers to the sometimes lonely and isolated existence of performers whilst touring - a metaphorical offering of close and trusted friends.

Pete had run all night before he located the camp at 3200 meters north. It was now morning and he was twelve hours early for the rendezvous. He had managed to grab some bananas on his way up and munched on them now with some iodized water, as he caught his breath. He kept up his guard and surveyed the camp. He found the tent and the three joined sleeping bags. He just cocked an eyebrow at that. He didn’t want to know, figuring it wasn’t his business. He continued to look around and found the spring fed pool rimmed by moss. It was a pretty cosy camp site Oscar had found for Chuck and Dr. Fairview he had to admit. He would probably have to wait much of the day here. So he found himself a good place to hide nearby in case any “unfriendlies” showed up. It was an outcropping of rock that overlooked the camp and was shored up by narrow clinging trees; good for a sniper to camp on and only big enough for one man. He hauled himself up there and got comfy. He sighted down his machine gun just in case he needed it. It began to drizzle. Pete closed his eyes and napped, secure that the slightest sound would wake him.

Oscar had followed the guerrillas from a distance at first, since he had to make up time needed to become untied. When he did catch up, he found them on the cusp of splitting up the party, so that Dr. Fairview would go with the leader and the remaining three would go on separately. He continued to follow Dr. Fairview and the leader. They headed lower in altitude all day and it seemed that Dr. Fairview engaged the leader in some chitchat. Good for her thought Oscar.

It was dark when the leader selected a campsite. He found what was in Oscar’s mind a perfect one; perfect because it had a cave. What better place to hide from pursuers than a cave. It also had a small spring. This leader was a clever one.

Oscar was unarmed and didn’t see any chances to rescue Dr. Fairview. So he kept out of sight rather than play the hero.

Oscar passed the night underneath some tropical leaf litter to say warm. Before the sun was up he rose to see how things were going with Dr. Fairview and the guerrilla leader. He took up his well hidden viewing position and waited. There they were emerging from the cave now. First out of the cave was Dr. Fairview and next was the Columbian. She looked rested and refreshed, so did he. He was still actively guarding her with the machine gun as they went about their morning business.

This seemed strange to Oscar. He had to pause to think about it. It didn’t seem to make sense. Dr. Fairview would have been cold and asked to share the guerrilla’s bedding. The guerrilla would have tried to take advantage of her. It was only natural. She would have fought him off for sure. Or maybe she could have given in. No, he did not think that Dr. Fairview would have given in so easily. Oscar chuckled as he recalled her reaction to Chuck’s erection. It must be that the guerrilla leader didn’t try anything with her. But why would that be? Could it be that he was gay? That thought just stopped him dead in his tracks. Oscar narrowed his eyes and inhaled sharply.

Gay and a Columbian Guerrilla? What would one do? There was no role as muy macho as a Columbian Guerrilla. The poor man! He could live his entire life and never know the love of another man! How sad indeed! Just a fucking tragedy! Oscar could not stand the thought of the intense emotional suffering and denial that must be taking place within the guerrilla leader. He pitied him. No wonder he was fraught with anger.

What to do, what to do? Oscar just knew he had to be right and that the Columbian guerrilla leader had to be gay.

Oscar could not wait to share this conclusion with the others. Plus, he had an idea of how they could rescue Dr. Fairview. So, off he ran towards the 3200 meter camp north for the rendezvous. It shouldn’t take more than 8 hours for him to get there.

Sometime during the day, William, Austin and José arrived back at base camp. William was feeling a bit better at the lower altitude but was upset that the trip was a failure. He began to bitch and moan.

“Fuck this goddamn trip. This fucking sucks big time! Damn it all to hell! Get me the fuck out of this goddamn hell hole. I hate this fuck ass place and will never set foot here again!”

Everyone just looked at him with sidelong glances not wanting to acknowledge his venom. Things were bad enough without adding to them. Mr. Butterfly thought that Ecuador was a truly beautiful place, a paradise, but they had just met up with a spate of bad luck. William got altitude sickness, and that does happen to some people. Allen did drugs, and that was his own fault. Sue was kidnapped by Columbian Guerrillas, well that was just plain stinking bad luck and happened very rarely. Actually, he only remembered the one other time that had ever happened and the guy was rescued. He was hoping for the same happy outcome.

Meanwhile, they were busy packing stuff in the truck to leave. Allen was staying in bed, having suffered a nervous breakdown of sorts and requiring sedation. But José, William, Austin, Chuck and Mr. Butterfly were all working together to get them ready to go.

Pete woke with light flashing in his eyes. It was just a little flash. Where was it coming from? Over there in the trees. A little reflection. A glint off of a piece of metal. A signal. What was it? Then he could see clearly, it was Oscar, signaling to him from up in a tree. That wily Oscar. How did he find me, thought Pete to himself. Pete lifted his machine gun in reply and climbed down off his sniper perch to rendezvous with Oscar.

“Hi Pete!”, said Oscar cheerfully.

“Cut the cute crap Oscar. How did you find me?”, replied Pete.

“It is what I do Pete. I never give away my secrets.”

“Great. What did you find out about Dr. Fairview?”

“The Guerrillas split up and she is alone with the leader. The leader found a great camp with a cave that is only 8 hours from here.”

“That is terrific news. We can take one guy out with no problem. How closely does he guard her?”

“Very closely. He has her at gun point at all times. But I have even better news. I think he is gay!”, said Oscar with glee.

“Run that by me again.”, said Pete dubiously.

“You heard me right. I think he is gay.”

“How on earth did you come to that conclusion boy?”

“Well, see Dr. Fairview gets really cold at night, so cold that we had to share body heat.”

“So we zipped our three sleeping bags together and did just that.”

“I saw the huge zipped together bag and was wondering but thought that you guys were adults, and it wasn’t my business.”

At that, Pete grinned and thought with satisfaction that he knew Sue would handle herself just fine. “So what does this have to do with the guerrilla leader being gay?”

“Well, like I said, Dr. Fairview gets cold at night, and she did when she was with the guerrilla leader too. So, I assume she had to share a sleeping bag with him too.”

“And! Get to the point Oscar!”, with some impatience evident in his voice.

“I was there this morning and when they both got up they looked rested and refreshed. Now, I figure that had he tried anything, she would not have looked that way. So he must not have tried anything. But how could he not when he has been with three other men all this time in the jungle? He just has to be gay!”

“Maybe.”, said Pete sounding not completely convinced.

“So, I have a plan. I will walk into his camp, seduce him and while we are getting busy, you can rescue Dr. Fairview.” Then Oscar grinned like the cat that ate the canary.

“Are you insane man? What is this, some gay fantasy? He will shoot you well before you have a chance to make a move. You over estimate your charms my boy if you think you will get anywhere with this plan.”

“Just hear me out here Pete. I am willing to put my ass on the line for this one; you should be willing to listen. You don’t know what it is like to deny yourself all your life the love you desperately desire and then to have it right in front of you, at your grasp, larger than life. You just don’t know. All I ask is that you give me a chance.”

Pete closed his eyes, sighed deeply and said “You don’t think he will be able to resist that fire hose between your legs?”

“Yup!”

“Let’s go for it.”

They departed for the guerrilla leader’s camp pronto.

Mon Voyage À L'Acadie: Part 7: Saint-Léolin & Shippegan

Okay, so now we can discuss our camp in Saint-Léolin. First, let me define what is meant by the word 'camp'. It was a small white house with two bedrooms that was furnished with whatever was on hand, probably from a refuse center [ie: town dump] and the finishing, such as the floor and wall coverings were whatever was to hand, such as leftover floor covering or paneling. So, in all, the look of the place was mismatched as far as furniture and some furniture looked quite ratty. In some places the flooring was bright and shiny and in others not so much. It didn't help matters that in general the place wasn't very clean. At $20 per night, the price was right.

All of this is to be expected in a 'camp' and I was not surprised at all. This was all expected by me. But, my mother, does not CAMP. She walked in and said "What a dump!" She hauled out her iPhone camera and began to snap photos:

This was the dresser in our room. Of it mom said "Grandma was a whore." Of course we got the best room.

Okay, so the other problem was that it was a two bedroom house with one bathroom and their were 9 of us. Nine people cramped into that small camp!!! So we had to be imaginative about sleeping arrangements:

My cousin sleeps in the area between bedrooms and I sleep in a closet [at least it was a big one]. Cousins slept in the kitchen and livingroom too. We slept everywhere exept the bathroom, because that was the busiest room in the house!

But it all worked out just fine and we left the camp many times cleaner than we found it.

Most mornings, mom couldn't wait to get out of there, and this morning we drove to Shippagan and the fleet was in and all decked out the Festival! Click to enlarge.

This is Laila, my German Shepherd dog, who is just 10 years old. I have thrown a twig out in the water for her and swims out to fetch it.

My darling puppy went on a hunger strike while I was in Canada and lost all energy. Sean thought it was because she missed me. Poor thing. If only they understood that I would be back. But we offered canned food, and the hunger strike ended swiftly. Mon Voyage À L'Acadie: Part 6: Grande-Anse & Anse Bleue

We drove to a camp we planned on sharing with our cousins [more on that later] that was close to Caraquet and then explored the area of Grande-Anse to see the local coves and beaches.

We found a private drive, and the sign said "Welcome friends," in French, so we felt we could go in since we are friendly people. No one was at home. But look at their view!

Then we got back into the car and drove looking for beaches. This one is a pay beach. For $5 you get public showers and this tiny patch of sand, complete with disgusting muddy area [near the split rail fence].

Here is the free beach. Gorgeous isn't it? It was really hot out, so I don't know why nobody was swimming. It was a work day though.

On our way back, we passed through Pointe-à-la-Croix, the town that is home to the Mi’kmaq. We went to a shop called Woodpile Handicrafts.

Once I laid eyes on these moccasins, I had to have a pair, even though they are not Mi’kmaq. Actually, we bought 3 pairs, one for me, one for my mom, and a pair for my twin.

Then I espied this lovely beaded belt that was made by a Mi’kmaq woman and I bought it!

Here are some photographs of the shop's displays. That is a goat skin and deer skin next to the snow shoes. I really wanted the deer skin, but it was out of my price range. It cost money! Then I thought about what my dogs would do to it! Yikes!

Look at this gorgeous display! I would so buy myself lace up moccasin boots! I see me prancing around in them everywhere! They are so fantastically adorable! Don't you think? Wouldn't I make a cute Pocahontas in those?

They also had the neatest leather jackets. They were each a piece of art and one-of-a-kind with embossing, metal and leather appliques and small carved stone fetish animals applied to the back, lapels, sleeves, pockets or breasts. One jacket had a bear motif and was perfect for Sean. Alas, it was $800. Oh well.

Great News for Troy Davis!

While I was in Canada, the Supreme Court of the United States reached a historic decision on Troy Davis' case as reported here in the Atlanta Journal Constitution:

Georgia death-row inmate Troy Anthony Davis has long insisted that, given another day in court, he could prove he did not kill a Savannah police officer 20 years ago.

On Monday, in an extraordinary order unlike any it has issued in almost half a century, the U.S. Supreme Court gave Davis such a chance.

The high court ordered a federal judge in the Southern District of Georgia to hear testimony that could not have been obtained at the time of Davis’ 1991 trial and decide whether this new evidence “clearly establishes” his innocence in the death of Officer Mark Allen MacPhail.

Davis’ sister, Martina Correia, said she was overjoyed.

“Finally, it’s going to happen,” she said. “I know that a lot of people still think Troy is guilty. But I know that executing him will not bring justice for Officer MacPhail. I truly believe Troy is innocent.”

The slain officer’s mother, Anneliese MacPhail, was in shock.

“I was really hoping they’d deny this appeal, not just shove it off to somewhere else,” she said, noting Wednesday is the 20th anniversary of her son’s death. “I would like it to come to an end.”

As for Davis, she said, “If you tell yourself for 20 years you didn’t do it, you start to believe it. I’m still convinced he did it.”

The high court’s decision gave yet another reprieve to Davis, whose life already had been spared three times shortly before his scheduled execution. If the court had rejected Davis’ latest request, the Chatham County district attorney was expected to seek a new execution date.

Davis’ innocence claims have attracted international attention and support. Former President Jimmy Carter and Pope Benedict XVI have said Davis should not be executed. In May, 27 former justices, judges and prosecutors filed a legal brief asking the high court to let a federal judge hear Davis’ claims.

Davis sits on death row for the 1989 killing of MacPhail, who was off-duty. MacPhail, 27, was shot multiple times after he responded to the wails of a homeless man being pistol-whipped in a Burger King parking lot.

Since the 1991 trial, seven of nine key prosecution witnesses have recanted their testimony. This includes recantations from witnesses who testified they saw Davis shoot and kill MacPhail.

Others have come forward and said another man, Sylvester “Redd” Coles, has admitted to them he was the killer. Coles, who denied shooting MacPhail, was at the scene and the first person to implicate Davis.

In Monday’s decision, Justice John Paul Stevens noted that no state or federal court has convened a hearing and heard the new testimony and assessed its reliability. “The substantial risk of putting an innocent man to death clearly provides an adequate justification for holding an evidentiary hearing,” Stevens wrote. He was joined by Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer.

Justice Antonin Scalia, joined by Justice Clarence Thomas, issued a vigorous dissent. He noted that the Georgia Supreme Court, the state Board of Pardons and Paroles and the federal appeals court in Atlanta already reviewed and rejected Davis’ claims of innocence.

The high court, Scalia said, is ordering a hearing that is “a fool’s errand” because Davis’ claim is “a sure loser.”

“Transferring his petition to the district court is a confusing exercise that can serve no purpose except to delay the state’s execution of its lawful criminal judgment,” Scalia said.

The decision noted that the court’s newest justice, Sonia Sotomayor, did not participate in it. Nor did the decision indicate how Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Anthony Kennedy and Samuel Alito voted. But at least two of them must have voted to grant Davis’ request because a five-vote majority was needed for it to prevail.

The court also did not assign the case to a specific judge. Davis’ federal appeal was previously denied by a senior judge who has since passed away. Once the case is formally transferred to the federal courthouse in Savannah, it will likely be assigned to either Chief Judge William T. Moore Jr. or Senior Judge B. Avant Edenfield, the clerk of court, Scott Poff, said Monday.

Davis’ federal appeal was stifled by the federal Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996, passed by Congress to streamline appeals. The statute makes it extremely difficult for death-row inmates to present new evidence.

In Monday’s order, the high court did not specify what new evidence could be presented at the upcoming hearing.

Stephen Bright of the Southern Center for Human Rights in Atlanta noted that the order shifts the burden of proof onto Davis to show he was innocent. “That’s a much more difficult proposition,” Bright said. “It doesn’t mean it can’t be done, but it’s a significant burden to overcome.”

New York attorney George Kendall, who also litigates death-penalty cases, said a key victory for Davis is that a judge can finally hear the testimony in open court, look the witnesses in the eyes, gauge their credibility and decide if Davis’ claims have merit. To date, the recantation testimony has been presented in sworn affidavits by the state’s witnesses who say police, intent on getting Davis, intimidated them into implicating him. Some of the witnesses also have testified in closed hearings before the state parole board.

“If Troy Davis can persuade a district court judge that his witnesses are credible, that enough of the recantations ring true and there may be reason to believe the other guy was the real killer, I think he’s got a shot at getting relief,” Kendall said. “If he can’t do that, he’s got no shot.”

Tom Dunn, one of Davis’ attorneys, said, “Although the burden we face is high, we are confident in Mr. Davis’ innocence and our evidence.”

Cornell University law professor John Blume said Monday’s decision could indicate the high court may be ready to set a new precedent.

“This could be an important first step toward the court’s recognition that it is unconstitutional to incarcerate or execute someone who is actually innocent,” Blume said. “People might be surprised by that, but the court has never recognized it.”

Scalia, who noted it had been almost 50 years since the high court took the action it took on Monday, made note that the court “has never held that the Constitution forbids the execution of a convicted defendant” who later convinced the courts he is “‘actually’ innocent.”

But Stevens responded by citing a dissent by Judge Rosemary Barkett of the federal appeals court in Atlanta, who in April said Davis’ new claims should be presented in open court. It “would be an atrocious violation of our Constitution and the principles upon which it is based” to execute an innocent person, Stevens wrote.

Justice John Paul Stevens, joined by Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer: “The substantial risk of putting an innocent man to death clearly provides an adequate justification for holding an evidentiary hearing. ... Imagine a petitioner in Davis’ situation who possesses new evidence conclusively and definitively proving, beyond any scintilla of doubt, that he is an innocent man. The dissent’s reasoning would allow such a petitioner to be put to death nonetheless.”

Pete told Mr. Butterfly that dinner was ready and to get Allen. So, Mr. Butterfly went to the back of the tent and called Allen who seemed to be sleeping. He shook him a bit and could not rouse him. “Allen!” He said firmly. “Wake up!” There was no response. He checked for breathing and it was shallow.

“Pete! Something is wrong with Allen! Come quick!”

Pete rushed to the back of the tent and said “What?”

“I cannot wake him up. His breathing is shallow.”

Pete checked Allen’s pulse at his neck, which was sluggish and looked into his eyes, saw the pinprick pupils and said “It is an overdose. Where you guys doing drugs?”

“I wasn’t. But I don’t know about him.”

“Go make coffee. I gotta get something outta my bag.”

Pete rushed to the front of the tent and then came back. He had a glass ampule and a syringe. He gently broke off the top of the ampule drew out a dose and gave Allen a shot in the arm. Then he proceeded to slap Allen’s face. By that time, Mr. Butterfly had come back.

“What did you give him?”, asked Mr. Butterfly.

“Narcan. It should bring him around if he took an opiate.”

Slowly, Allen began to come around. He said “Leave me alone!”, as he tried weakly to push Pete away.

“No way! Tell me where your junk is asshole!” Pete commanded.

“Fuck you Pete!”

Pete slapped Allen hard. “You fucktard! Tell me where it is or I will slap you silly! I will not run an illegal base camp!”

Allen began to sob and pointed to where his stash was. Pete said to Mr. Butterfly “Bring him some coffee now.” Pete went and got the heroin bags so that he could dump them in the river.

After a long struggle, Chuck and Oscar managed to untie each other. Oscar said “I will trail them without being detected. I can do that much. Then we will know where they are. You run to base camp and get Pete.”

Chuck said “Agreed.”

“We will rendezvous here in 48 hours time.”

“Affirmative.”

Each man set off at a run in opposite directions.

We walked at a forced march for nearly three hours. Then we stopped. Iodized water was passed around. There seemed to be a plan afoot. The leader was to break off from the main group and take me to a safe place to be held in wait for pick up. The remainder of the group was to move on and arrange for the money drop. The discussion was all in Spanish, but that was what I was able to glean. So, I went with the leader in a direction that was lower in altitude. At least he spoke English. I began to relax a bit and decided to start a conversation after we had walked for an hour or so.

“Um, my name is Sue. What is yours?”

He looked at me with angry heated eyes that softened a bit when he saw my face. He said “Cristo. My name is Cristo.”

“Cristo. That is a religious name. You are named after Christ our Lord.”

“Si. That is so.”

But he continued to seem to be really angry.

“Why are you angry with me Cristo?”

“You are what we would call puta in Spanish if you sleep with two men at the same time. I’m sorry; I don’t know the English word for it.”

I knew what he meant, but didn’t want to tell him the word was slut. “Um, I don’t think you understand Cristo. We didn’t have any sex. I just get cold at night. I know it is probably difficult to believe, but we were sharing our body heat to keep me warm.”

“Right. And I am Mickey Mouse.”

Then he laughed. It always surprises me how well American humour travels worldwide. He must have watched some American television when he was a boy.

“You’ll see tonight when I am shivering uncontrollably.”, I replied wishing I had a wittier comeback.

He just continued to laugh.

At base camp, everyone was sound asleep when Chuck came running in at a full gallop to report that Sue had been kidnapped and was being held for a million dollars ransom by Columbian Guerrillas. Pete awoke immediately and got on his radio to call in Austin’s group to report back to base camp ASAP. As it was, William would have to limp back as he was not completely recovered from his altitude sickness.

A plan of response was formulated quickly. Pete would depart immediately with the GPS to find the camp at 3200 meters north where he would rendezvous with Oscar at 48 hours. Chuck would stay at base camp to guard Mr. Butterfly and Allen and rest. As soon as they arrived at base camp the guys from the south camp and other non-military personnel would be sent to Quito for safety under the supervision of José. Austin and Chuck would then rejoin the hunt with Pete. The Ecuadorian Army would not be called in until Sue was recovered.

Mr. Butterfly chimed in here.

“I will not be sent away while Sue is in captivity. She is my friend. I will not leave her in her time of need. I want to go and save her.”

“That’s great Mr. B, but you’ll get your ass shot off. I am in charge and I forbid it.”, replied Pete.

“May I at least stay at base camp?”

“Well, let’s wait and see how long it takes for the south group to get here and decide then. Okay?”

“Okay.”

Fresh radios and machine guns were dispensed as needed to all ex-military personnel. Chuck was briefed on the situation at base camp. Pete began his mission to rendezvous with Oscar at 3200 meters north camp.

Pete thought to himself, I am just getting to fucking old for this shit, as he hurried up the mountain at a good trot. It was fortunate that he took the time to train at altitude. Now that preparation was paying off. The directions from Chuck were pretty straight forward. Chuck might not have his head on straight about women, but he gave bang up directions in the woods. Pete would need to head at this pace and bearing for 8 more hours and he would be there.

Pete could feel his old shrapnel injury acting up. He ignored it like a good Marine. He focused on the goal; finding and rescuing Sue. He peered through the underbrush to see his footing, so that he wouldn’t slip and fall. But this trail, made by a tapir was pretty good. It was guaranteed to get tougher later.

I began to shiver uncontrollably again. I had no sleeping bag, so I wasn’t surprised at all. We had walked an entire day, but Cristo found us a camp with a small hidden cave.

The entrance was behind densely hanging vines and could not be seen at all. There was a small spring for water also. He had a simple blanket that he folded in two to use for a sleeping bag, and I had nothing. We lay on the bare ground in the cave to sleep. The air was so humid and dank I felt as if I would never be dry and warm again.

“Cristo, I am very cold.”

He opened his eyes and looked at me. There was enough moonlight from the mouth of the cave for him to see that my lips were turning blue.

“You really weren’t kidding. Come here and sleep with me.” He opened his blanket so that I could get in. I was a bit afraid that he would take advantage of me, but not really. I got in and he was very warm. He held me close with one arm around my waist and his crotch was in my butt. I fully expected him to get an erection, but he didn’t. That made me wonder; could he possibly be gay?

Mon Voyage À L'Acadie: Part 4: Percé Rock, Quebec

Finally we had made it to Percé Rock on the tip of a peninsula of the Gaspé. As we walked around the town and came upon this school, we headed over the hill and were able to see the dock and a tour boat that was much like our own. Click photos to enlarge.

Unfortunately, it was quite foggy! But I guess you'll rarely see photographs of Percé Rock in the fog!

Here is the infamous rock as we saw it the day before from 'Surprise' lookout point. Note how there was little fog the day before.

And here it is the day we took a tour boat out to see it! Where is the top of it??? Note the other large tour boat that is in front of it nearing the hole.

Here is a closeup of the hole which is 15 meters high (50 feet).

This was a hole, but broke through some time ago.

This photo was taken looking back at the rock as we steamed towards the nearby Bonaventure Island.

Bonaventure Island shelters many seals which I found challenging to photograph!

There was a really cute one where the splash is!!!

Well, that camera setting didn't work!

But, Bonaventure Island is most important for housing the largest colony of Northern gannets in the world with over 100,000 birds. See all of the white dots on the cliffs? Those are gannets!

Our boat even powered close up to one of their nesting rocks, and of course, this blogger was in exactly the right place on the boat to get a photo! I could have reached out and touched a bird! I was in the prow leaning on the railing while the Captain had the front of the boat almost touch the rock! I was afraid to move and scare the birds away! Isn't this a great shot!

I didn't use my zoom at all so that you could get a feel for how close I actually was.

I was disappointed though because I wanted to see an Atlantic Puffin [to add to my life list] and we didn't see a one!

Below is our capable and bilingual tour guide, Guillaume.

Guillaume has the typical Quebecois looks: short, swarthy and very sexy. His voice was quite low and he was super friendly. It is too bad that he chose to hold his hands where he did, because he seemed rather hung to me. Note how much he resembles the artisan Hector, who is also Quebecois.

It was also too foggy to see whales. Well, that was what happened the last time I was on a whale watch too. I must be jinxed!

I am so madly excited about this Tour its gonna be my debut to perform in the United States of America and i am so looking forward to it..we starting rehearsals really soon and our new choreographers are simply amazing i am sure it will be something new for us and for kylie and just that makes me so proud to be part of Minogue History again...
